The story is again saved by some gorgeous artwork, particularly one panel showing a veritable smorgasbord of Batman baddies. The Ultimate Riddle feels like it really wanted to be a crossover with many more franchises for its arena-battle-to-the-death storyline to work, filled as it is with run-of-the-mill monsters, aliens and robots. Vendetta in Gotham is basically a lengthy fight between the two characters with The Ventriloquist as the token bad guy, and Cam Kennedy's artwork is the polar opposite of Bisley's, following a much more traditional DC style. The book itself is an odd size - bigger than standard comics, but smaller than regular graphic novels - so some of the detail is lost, but at least we still get to see all the glorious cover art. The other three stories are written by Wagner and Grant again, and feature more amazing art from the likes of Glenn Fabry, Jim Murray, Val Semeiks, Carl Critchlow and Dermot Power. This graphic novel was the first of four crossovers which 2000AD and DC Comics have published over the years and they are all collected together for the first time in a special hardback edition which is available now. The painting are so detailed, so angular, so muscular, so visceral and certainly a little risqué in places, it certainly helped make up for what was, in all honesty, a bit of a weak story and guaranteed it a space on my bookshelf. Judgement in Gotham was written by Dredd co-creator John Wagner and the great Alan Grant and features Dredd's nemesis Judge Death teaming up first with Mean Angel and then with The Scarecrow to bring his own kind of judgement to Gotham City, and to entertain us with his own special rendition of the Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil." The artwork is by Simon Bisley and has to be some of the most amazing illustration ever put into a comic book - I love the panel showing what Death fears the most, and Bisley's rendition of the Batmobile is simply amazing.

They should get like a house on fire right? That was the premise behind the 1991 graphic novel crossover which saw Mega-City One's toughest lawman and Gotham City's darkest knight jumping dimensions (with the help of a handy bit of tech from MC1) to battle each other and each other's villains. One is a billionaire playboy philanthropist by day and a masked crime fighting vigilante by night, the other is a brutal neo-nazi future cop dispensing justice in a totalitarian society.
